RTC union elections likely soon as 11% fitment gets nod

Hyderabad: RTC union elections are expected to be notified shortly after Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar directed officials to begin the election process in consultation with the election officer.

The minister reviewed TGSRTC’s performance at the Secretariat on Thursday. During the meeting, he instructed officials to complete preparatory steps for the recognised unions’ elections. As a result, the election schedule is likely to be released soon.

Ponnam Prabhakar also announced the implementation of 11 percent fitment under RPS-2021 from July 1. He said the decision fulfils a commitment made during the RTC strike.

The minister stated that the government procured 2,815 new buses worth ₹1,078 crore between 2023 and 2026. In addition, new depots were sanctioned at Eturunagaram and Peddapalli.

Officials informed the meeting that TGSRTC currently operates 10,173 buses. Moreover, the corporation covers 35 lakh kilometres daily and serves nearly 61 lakh passengers every day.

The minister said compassionate appointments had been provided to 1,137 dependents. Furthermore, he directed officials to speed up pending appointments and review remaining cases of dismissed employees.

RTC union elections amid employee welfare measures

Ponnam Prabhakar said the government’s financial measures helped reduce employee welfare arrears. Consequently, CSS arrears declined from ₹1,096.90 crore to ₹862 crore.

Similarly, PF arrears fell from ₹2,018.15 crore to ₹1,714.39 crore. In addition, SRBS and SBT arrears were reduced by ₹493.02 crore.

The minister instructed officials to accelerate the construction of bus stations and depots across the state. He also directed them to expedite land transfer processes required for infrastructure development.

Meanwhile, he proposed a special meeting of transport ministers and senior officials from southern states. The meeting would discuss pollution control measures, electric vehicle policies and expansion of electric bus services.
